Amir the lifesaver!

When I’m in Pakistan, we rent a car for the duration of our stay. My friends don’t have a car, and relying entirely on motorcycles isn’t very practical. But renting a car there—given the traffic—isn’t really done the usual way; you rent from private individuals who immediately offer themselves as drivers. It’s a great way to connect with locals as well. Last time, our (Muslim) driver was so impressed by what was happening that he invited us to his home to pray for his brother.

His brother had been in an accident while avoiding a young boy crossing the busy highway on his motorcycle. He fell, and a rickshaw behind him couldn’t avoid him and ran over his back. As a result, he suffered a spinal injury.

During our visit, I noticed that he wasn’t just suffering physically—his spirit was hurting too. I began encouraging him, showing how remarkable it was that he had saved a life at the cost of his own health. That changed his perspective.

Last week, my friends were able to present the award we had made for Amir. It meant so much to him! I was able to join via video call and hand it over virtually. Now he can hang it on his wall, and it will reshape his story—for himself and for those who come to visit him.

Small gestures with a big impact 😉

Yes, ik draag mijn steentje bij!
